The Chandler Police Explorers have developed a structure very similar to the police department’s. As you begin the application process, your status is that of Applicant. Once you have completed the application process and have been awarded a position within the Post, your status is up graded to Recruit. You progress through the positions within the post by testing for promotions. Our program has the following levels:
Application is easy. To start, all you need to do is show up. We have meetings every week on Tuesday nights at 1900 hours (7pm). They are held in the Officer Nielsen Community Room at the Desert Breeze Sub-Station. Please see our Home Page for address and contact information.
When you arrive, look to speak to an officer of any explorers and you will be introduced to the Corporal or Sergeant working with new applicants.
We ask that you attend a few meetings (usually three) to make sure the program is right for you. On your third meeting, you will be given an application packet to complete. When you return it, you must also submit a one-time fee of $20 dollars. The cost of application goes to offset the cost of uniforms and shirts you will be provided.
Once we have your completed application, we will ensure the following criteria are met:
Once all this is verified, your status is elevated to Recruit and you are a member of the Chandler Police Explorer Program.
As a Recruit, you are not only encouraged, but expected to assist in Details worked by the Explorer Post and begin leaning about the police department, functions, radio codes and more. At this level you are issued a shirt and a gun-belt with radio holster. After a written examination, you are promoted to the position of Probationary Cadet. As a Probationary cadet, you are issued a Class A & B uniform, which includes additional gear for your gun-belt.
With more experience, education and tests; you are promoted to the position of Cadet and given the opportunity to earn a metal badge for your uniform shirt. You are also now eligible to test for Command Positions within the Post. These include Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain.
Promotion to these positions brings with it additional responsibility, as well as greater benefits. For instance, as a corporal; you will be tasked with working with new applicants and monitoring the equipment inventory of the program. Sergeants have squads of explorers that they guide and help develop into better explorers as well as ensure they complete tasks asked of them.
Lieutenants within the post aid the Sergeants, work at the direction of the Captain and will fill in for the absence of the Captain. To that end, the Captain of the post is most responsible for the operations of the program, ensuring detail responsibilities are met, and reporting to the Advisor and his supervisors.
All Explorers, regardless of rank, have the opportunity to achieve the status of Senior Cadet. This position requires time, dedication and; among other things, the identification of a community service need and developing an action plan to meet that need.
